5 Criminal Cases Involving Cricketers

The dark world of crime is something which always intrigues people and attracts their attention. And when it involves celebrities, especially cricketers, the interest of people is hiked all-the-more.
The recent controversy surrounding Mohammed Shami has also raised many eyebrows. The matter is still under investigation but stories pertaining to it have caught the public eye. Over the years, we have had several such incidences which have not only grabbed the headlines but also cast a negative impact on the image of the cricketer concerned.
Let us have a look at five such criminal cases which were widely reported.

MOHAMMED SHAMI

The recent controversy involving cricketer Mohammed Shami rocked the Indian cricket fraternity when his wife Hasin Jahan accused him of multiple extra-marital affairs, domestic abuse and attempt to murder. Jahan has alleged that Shami has extra-marital affairs with several women and has been torturing her for a long time.
The FIR was registered against Shami and his four other family members in Kolkata’s Jadavpur police station under several Indian Penal Code (IPC) sections, including section 498A, which amounts to cruelty to a woman by her husband or his relatives.
The other charges recorded against Shami are under Section 307 – attempt to murder, Section 323 – punishment for voluntarily causing hurt, Section 376 – rape, Section 506 – criminal intimidation, Section 328 and Section 34.
The entire episode has hit the fast bowler Shami really hard. Hasin Jahan has also made an allegation that Shami was involved in match-fixing and took money from a Pakistani woman. Considering this BCCI has kept Shami’s name on hold on the renewed contract list. His participation in Indian Premier League 2018 could also be in jeopardy. His IPL franchise Delhi Daredevils has been keeping a close eye on the matter and awaiting BCCI’s legal opinion before taking further action.

An attacking middle-order batsman, he holds the record for England’s fastest ever Test double-century, the fastest ever Test match 250, and the highest ever score for a Test batsman batting at six. Stokes became the highest paid overseas player in the history of the Indian Premier League in 2017, fetching a record contract of ₹145 million.
Following the third ODI against West Indies at Bristol in September 2017, Ben Stokes was charged with affray after CCTV footage of a nightclub surfaced in which Stokes could be clearly seen punching a man repeatedly. Following a late-night brawl in Bristol, Stokes had to sit out of the entire Ashes followed by the ODI and T20I series against Australia as the legal process was still ongoing.
The ECB granted Stokes permission to join English team only after he pleaded ‘not guilty’ before the Bristol Magistrates’ Court on 13/02/2018. ODI series against New Zealand in Hamilton was his comeback series.


YUVRAJ SINGH

Akanksha Sharma has filed a case of domestic violence against cricketer Yuvraj Singh, his brother Zorawar Singh and mother Shabnam Singh in august 2017. She married Zorawar Singh, younger brother of cricketer Yuvraj Singh in 2014. The Bigg Boss 10 contestant alleges she suffered ‘mental and financial torture’ at the hands of her mother-in-law and husband and accuses the cricketer of being a ‘mute spectator’. Through the course of her marriage she was forced to carry out unnecessary tasks, was forbidden to interact with outsiders, criticized for every move and had her personal things examined by her mother-in-law. Yuvraj Singh did nothing to stop the mistreatment and in fact, did their bit to add to it.


NAVJOT SINGH SIDHU

Former Indian cricketer Navjot Singh Sidhu was accused of assaulting Gurnam Singh and causing his death in 1991. It was reported that Sidhu had an accomplice who helped him in the murder of Gurnam Singh, the name of the accomplice was Bhupinder Singh Sandhu. In an FIR registered in 1988, it was alleged that Navjot Sidhu and Bhupinder Singh Sandhu smashed Gurnam Singh after dragging him out his car. In December 2006, Sidhu was found guilty and sentenced to a three-year prison term for culpable homicide following a road rage incident.Subsequently, Sidhu appealed against the High court verdict in the Supreme Court, which suspended the previous judgment in 2007. He currently serves as the Minister of Local Government, Tourism, Cultural Affairs, and Museums of the State of Punjab.


RUBEL HOSSAIN

Mohammad Rubel Hossain is a Bangladeshi cricketer. Naznin Akter Happy, a Bangladeshi actress made the rape allegation, claiming Rubel Hossain had reneged on a promise of marriage that he made while they were having an “intimate affair”. The actress filed a complaint against him, just two months prior to the 2015 World Cup when he was part of the 15-member Bangladeshi squad for the World Cup. As a result, Hossain was arrested but later granted bail until the end of the World Cup in view of “national interest” as he was a key member of Bangladesh’s team. However, following the right-armer’s match-winning performance against England in the World Cup, Happy withdrew the charges.
