Ghoomar is a traditional folk dance of Rajasthan, India. The dance is mainly performed by veiled women who wear flowing dresses called Ghaghara. Interestingly, Ghoomar is not only an act of singing and dancing but this folk dance is also a symbol of womanhood–a rite of passage in which young girls participate, declaring that they are entering womanhood.
Bollywood star Deepika Padukone has already won the hearts of millions with her mesmerising performance on ‘Ghoomar’ song from Padmaavat. When Padmaavat’s ‘Ghoomar’ was released, it managed to make waves across the nation within hours. For the song, Deepika learned the dance form under the guidance of renowned Ghoomar expert Jyoti D Tommaar, who runs the only authentic Ghoomar school, founded by Late Padmashree HH Rajmata Geverdan Kumariji of Santrampur (former Princess of Kishangarh, Rajasthan).
The recent addition to the list of Ghoomar dance is an emergence of YouTube Video in which Las Vegas figure-skater Mayuri Bhandari twirls to the tune of Ghoomar from Padmaavat.
“In honour of the film Padmaavat‘s release, here is my ice skating tribute to the beautiful song Ghoomar! As a Rajasthani, I skate to this song with pride!” Mayuri captioned the 3.32-minute video uploaded on YouTube.
